Military Swords

These all new katana feature Hanwei's own high-alloy katana steels (HWS-1S / HWS-2S), which combine impressive performance with a striking O-choji hamon. This steel is made in Hanwei's new factory, with high-tech equipment, producing a very pure, advanced-metallurgy blade with excellent edge-holding capability and resilience.

Military DaDao
This sword replicates a Dadao used by the Chinese military during the Japanese invasion of China in the pre-WWII era and celebrates a Chinese victory at the battle of the Great Wall, in which the Dadao and the Katana were actually pitted against each other. The leather handle wrap is representative of the many different wrapping materials originally used by the poorly-equipped army - many of the handles were simply wrapped with strips of clothing fabric, knotted in place. A leather scabbard is included for safety, though the originals had none. The sword is ruggedly built to handle heavy-duty cutting.

Yasukuni Captian's Gunto

This sword replicates the Gunto of a high-ranking Japanese army officer of the Pre-WWII and WWII era. These swords were made from 1933 onwards by a group of highly-skilled sword-smiths at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo and are known collectively as the Yasukuni swords. Only 8000 of these swords were made and many were destroyed, so in recent years they have become highly collectable. Hanwei is producing these very accurate replicas for collectors unable to afford or obtain originals. The sword features a forged blade of high carbon 1095 steel. Hand-woven pure silk Sageo, with accurate red Captain-rank coloration

The Jie Dao, which may vary greatly in size, is traditionally used by Shaolin monks not as a weapon (which is forbidden) but for domestic purposes, including shaving. When traveling on foot, the Jie Dao may be used to clear a path in the forest or to gather firewood. The “Jie” in Jie Dao means “abstain”, and Jie Dao translates as “the sword of abstention from killing”. This explains the deliberate lack of a sharp point and ascribes spiritual as well as functional value. The best known legend involving the Jie Dao tells of Huike, the successor to Bhodidharma, who cut off his left arm with a Jie Dao in order to demonstrate his sincerity to Dharma. The Shaolin Jie Dao is presented in two elegantly simple versions, the smaller piece (SH2441) exemplifying the implement used by the monks in their daily routine while the larger version (SH2440) is typical of a traveling aid. Both have forged blades in high-carbon steel that are blunt-ended, emphasizing their non-threatening nature, complemented by bamboo handles and scabbards with traditional steel fittings.
